Is Meditation Biblical?

Is meditation biblical?

The short answer is: Yes! But it may not look like what you think.

The dictionary defines meditation as "thinking deeply or focusing one's mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation."

Christian meditation is where individuals seek to deepen their relationship with God through prayer and reflection. Unlike secular practices, Christian meditation focuses on biblical passages, prayer, or sacred words or phrases like the Lord's Prayer. Christians meditate on these passages and phrases to God and receive spiritual insights, which is biblical!

"Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." - Joshua 1:8

"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14

"My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding." - Psalm 49:3

"May my meditation be pleasing to Him, as I rejoice in the LORD." - Psalm 104:34

"I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways." - Psalm 119:15

"I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done." - Psalm 143:5

While Christian and secular practices involve mindfulness and inner reflection, Christian meditation aims to align one's thoughts and intentions with Christian beliefs and values, ultimately seeking spiritual growth and communion with God.
