How Knowing Your Identity Can Save Your Life

Here’s why knowing your identity can literally save your life.

We’ve all been through dark seasons before. When we go through these seasons, it’s easy to forget our worth. We lose focus on what’s important and true, and we start listening to the lies that pain can bring:

“You don’t matter.”

“You’re not worth it.”

“You’re stuck.”

“There’s no way out.”

But here’s the truth: You do matter. You are worth it. You’re not stuck, and there is always a way out. You were created with a God-given identity, and knowing this identity can bring you hope in even the darkest times.

But how do you know your God-given identity?

Know what God says about you.

If you don’t know God or His Word (the Bible), you’re going to have a hard time knowing your identity. This is because God created you, and since He created you, He’s the only one who can tell you who you truly are. If you don’t know your God-given identity, start by reading the Bible. Consider searching “Bible verses about my identity” or “What does the Bible say about me?”

Know the gifts God has equipped you with.

What are you good at? What do you enjoy? Chances are, these point to your God-given gifts! When you know what God has specifically equipped you to do, it gives you a reason to push forward and a goal to accomplish. Plus, doing things you enjoy can make life more fun!

Know the right people to be around.

You can know God, His Word, and yourself pretty well, but if you’re surrounded by people who only bring you down, you’re going to have a hard time reaching your full potential. You need to know the right people to be around and then put yourself in environments where you’re around them. The “right” people to be around are people who have similar biblical values as you, see your value, and will encourage you to keep going when you want to give up. Who are these people in your life?

Your life has value. You were created on purpose for a purpose. When you begin to see yourself through that lens, not just what you’ve been through, but as someone who’s deeply loved, you find hope, even in the darkest nights. Life is precious, and so are you!

If you’re struggling, please don’t carry it alone. Reach out to a friend, counselor, or call 988 or the suicide crisis line.

You are seen. You are loved. You are worth fighting for.
