How to Rebuild Trust

Building trust involves open communication, practicing honesty, and being reliable and consistent. Being present and being a good listener also contribute to building trust.

But what about when trust is broken in a relationship? How do you rebuild that? Below are some steps you can take to rebuild trust in your relationship.

Acknowledge the mistake(s).

First and foremost, the mistakes made must be acknowledged. You can't fix something if you don't confront it.

Take responsibility.

Own your mistakes. Take responsibility for your actions, and don't blame others.

Apologize sincerely.

An authentic apology goes a long way. When you know you've messed up, apologize sincerely.

Demonstrate your commitment to change.

Find a way to show your partner that you're going to change. This can include counseling or setting guardrails to ensure the mistake doesn't happen again.

Rebuilding trust will take time, so be patient, especially with the person you're building that trust with.
